What happens after I contact you about arranging lessons? When you make contact with me, I will respond by email, answer any initial questions you may have, and check that a mutually-convenient lesson time is available. I will then invite you to an introductory meeting on Zoom (usually lasting about 20-30 minutes) to discuss your learning goals and experience, identify suitable textbooks and other resources, and answer more detailed questions. There is, of course, no charge for this meeting. If after the meeting you are happy to go ahead, we will book a first lesson.
-
Can I get a free trial lesson? You will pay the "initial lesson price" for your first lesson at the time of booking (please see the lesson prices schedule). If you choose to continue lessons, the cost of this lesson will be deducted from the cost of your first block of four lessons, so you effectively get the first lesson free.
-
How do "lesson blocks" work?"In order to keep prices low and ease timetabling, I ask students to pay in advance for blocks of four lessons. For most students, this will represent one month's lessons. In return for this commitment, I apply a discount to the usual full lesson price (which can be seen in the "initial lesson price") when calculating the cost of blocks of four lessons.
-
When do I pay for lessons?Your first lesson will be paid for at the time of booking. After your first lesson, if you would like to continue, we will agree a regular lesson day/time and interval. I will then invoice you in advance for lessons in four lesson blocks. Payment is due on the invoice due date, which will be before the date of the first lesson in that lesson block.
-
How do I pay for lessons?Students pay for their lessons by direct bank transfer. Details will be provided when you book your first lesson.
-
How often will I have a lesson? Most students have weekly or fortnightly lessons. If you would like to have two lessons per week, or would like to request a different lesson interval, this may be possible - please ask.
-
When will my lessons take place? After your initial lesson, we will agree a regular day and time for your lessons (e.g. Tuesdays at 2pm). Lessons are scheduled to take place within my office hours, which are Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm UK time. Please note that 3pm-6pm is very busy and I currently have a waiting list for lessons at these times.
-
Where will my lessons take place? At present all lessons take place online via Zoom.
-
What about holidays and other absences? To ensure maximum flexibility, before I invoice you for each lesson block I will ask you to confirm the dates of your next four lessons. Please tell me at this point if you can't attend on one of your usual lesson days and we will either cancel that lesson (without charge) or, if mutually convenient, reschedule. At the same time, I shall advise you if I am going to be away on any of your usual lesson days/ times and cancel or reschedule as you prefer.
-
What if my normal lesson day falls on a Bank Holiday?I don't teach on Bank Holidays. If your lesson falls on a Bank Holiday we will either cancel that lesson (without charge) or do our best to find another mutually convenient time in the same week, as you prefer.
-
Do lessons continue during school/ university holidays?I teach during school terms, which are longer than most university terms. If you wish to continue lessons across the school holidays, this is usually possible, although with some breaks due to my own annual leave. I understand that because of family commitments (or because they are themselves in school) many students prefer to take a break from lessons during school holidays; I am happy to accommodate this.

Do you offer lessons in other languages? At present I am offering Latin, Middle Egyptian and Coptic lessons online. I also teach Ancient Greek and demotic Egyptian and hope to offer online lessons in these languages in the future. If you are interested, please contact me.
